Monas

To me it was a surprise how little I knew about Jakarta. Sometimes it feels like being in Manila - in terms of traffic especially, yet drivers seems to get along smoothly and quietly. No honking. The best to commute is the motor bikes...Honda, Suzuki. The coolest thing is their helmets.

Have you ever heard about Monas? It is National Monument. Is located in downtown Jakarta. This is my first time in Jakarta, so my colleagues were nice to take me there - a twenty km ride from Karawaci where I am staying, Karawaci is part of Jakarta. National Monument was built in 1961 to symbolize the Indonesian independence, declared by president Suharto Hatta on August 17, 1945. Inside the monument you can actually hear the declaration. You also see the garuda bird which is full of symbolism to the numbers of independence...such as it has 17 feathers on its wings. The chain under the bird symbolises men and women together. The idea of Indonesian independence is unity in diversity. And there is a lot of diversity in terms of people groups, cultures, religions, languages.

  1. Hieno blogi Eila. Onnea matkaan sinne Jakartaan.

Metro TVn uutisotsikoiden ylapuolella lukee 'Pray for Indonesia' eli rukoile Indonesian puolesta.
