Since this year's AMIC conference was in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, there
were several presentations about Indonesian media. One of the key issues was
the Internet. Internet usage is driven by youth. Several studies pointed out
that young people, are eager users of Internet; they find, use and share
information, entertainment, lifestyle and sports stories via Internet and
social media.
They trust online media a lot, so much so that when asked,
how did Michael Jackson die – they believe the false story created by online media,
and not the real story delivered by the news wires.
Even though young people use and share information, they do
neither analyse the content, nor produce the content. However, producing the
content is seen as participatory, and bringing development.
Indonesia is going to have elections next year, therefore,
young people are asked about their political participation. As of now, studies
show that using online media does not increase young people’s participation to
politics.
