AMIC TELEVISION TOPICS

AMIC conference had also presentations on television scene in Indonesia and China.

Television is the most referred medium in Indonesia, due to long history of PALAPA satellite project, which facilitated even the most remote areas of Indonesia have good television signal. Indonesians spend an average of five hours watching television. The positive thing about television is that it is family occupation, unlike Internet. Families watch together, and parents are involved in their children’s watching television.
One example of good cartooon is Malaysian produced 'Upin and Ipin', (Upin in the tv screen shot is the one with a little bit of hair on top). It is slow pace cartoon, which includes also teachings for children. Very cute in my opinion, reminds me of Finnish Moomi's in style.

Some trends in Indonesian television include that male dominate the screen; there is more male than female presenters on screen. Another trend is that the programs show affiliation with Islam. From 1980 to 2000, showing affiliation has increased from 27% to 68%.
The biggest gap in Indonesian television programs is that there is very little content for teens and preteens.

China television was dealt in several presentations. There is difference between Shanghai and Beijing television culture. Shanghai is multicultural, postmodern with international media standard; while Beijing is traditional.
